Once upon a time, nestled among the groovy lands of San Benito County, some righteous Wente-clone Chardonnay grapes were harvested and picked by the bright and free-spirited production team at Tank Garage Winery. For a brief history lesson: the Wente clone originated in the Wente Vineyards in Livermore, CA. C.H. Wente was an early pioneer of the California wine industry. His son, Ernest Wente, convinced him to bring some Chardonnay into an experimental lot using budwood from Meursault and vines from Montpellier, France and as the two sources mutated over time, they’ve now formed the genetic base for 75% of California Chardonnay. Trippy, huh?

We knew with some harmoniously classic grapes like these, and to capture the most vibrant expression of these psychedelic textures and flavors we turned to the méthode ancestrale. For anyone who might need a refresh, this is the oldest method for making sparkling wine and produces a beautiful and all-natural “pét-nat” (or pétillant naturel) by trapping carbon dioxide and fermenting itself inside the bottle with no added sugar or yeast.
