The story

100% pure squeezed sunshine.

The legendary tag team of Tank x HUF Worldwide is back with a limited edition strain of orange wine, with plenty of highs and no pulp.

The story unfolds like this, the homies at HUF reached out to see if we wanted to collaborate on their Plantlife collection, and asked for something that pairs well with, well...you know what. As a crew that's maybe partook in smokin' indo while sippin' on our own juice, we had an idea:

Orange wine. You know, that thing we do where we crush white grapes and let them sit on their skins to extract tropical aromas, exotic flavors, and that signature orange color? Typically with white grapes, you'll crush the grapes and immediately separate the juice from the skins. But as we do with red wines, we figured out that if we let the two parties marinate together for about a week, we get something super delicious.

As a quick history lesson, skin-contact white wine isn't some new hipster fad, this is a technique that has been around for nearly 8,000 years in winemaking. With this particular blend, we had some really unique varieties to work with too, including Trousseau Gris from the Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard, home to the only remaining plantings of this grape in the US. So when you taste this, you get to enjoy one of the rarest experiences in viticulture. Which makes it a cool complement to the horticulture. 😉

In your cup, marvel at those sexy tangerine hues and soak in the aromas of mandarin orange, apricot, and jasmine. Once it finds its way into your mouth, savor an explosion of sexy and exotic flavors including citrus, peach, nectarine, green apple, and a little herb. It's got all the elements to pair with your winter shellfish, '70s R&B records, and some grass.

For a blend that's all about tropical vibes, we found it fitting to name it in homage to our favorite throwback orange juice...with a unique Cali twist. In collaboration with HUF, we bottled and wax-dipped just 42 cases as a part of this special collectors project.

What do you really desire? Something run-of-the-mill, or something that pushes the boundaries and defies conventions? Think outside the box. Answer us now, or else. We mean it.

Get your head out of the gutter, we’re talking about wine here. Introducing BDXSM, another wine from the Tank team that takes a classic (in this case, a Bordeaux blend) and transcends the boundaries of everything you think you know about wine from the Napa Valley.

With sensually striking label artwork by René Garza, this bottle challenges your expectations, and commands attention before opening it up, emerging to you as an exploration of pleasure and dark sophistication. In the glass, this wine unveils itself as a deep maroon hue, hinting at the depth of desire that awaits your palate. The nose presents a seductive symphony of blackcurrant, cassis, baking spice, and a touch of cedar, heightening your senses to a carnal realm previously unvisited.

Ready to dive deeper? We’re not waiting for your answer. BDXSM takes command with prominent and balanced tannins with a firm, yet velvety grip that envelops your palate. With an exciting interplay of dark cherry, spiced plum, marjoram, bay leaf, and tobacco, this wine transcends the ordinary, taking you on a journey that intermingles suspense and desire with each sip.

Crafted from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Malbec, the majority of the Cabernet was sourced from one of our faves, Siletto Vineyard in San Benito County. The rest of the grapes were sourced from vineyards so exclusive in the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, that we had to keep them a secret, but that doesn’t stop them from asserting their dominance on your taste buds. These grapes were meticulously de-stemmed and cold-soaked in stainless steel and matured in the embrace of French Oak until bottling in November 2021.

BDXSM is an invitation to surrender to the pleasures of the palate and take a journey into the realms of desire and curiosity that linger long after the last drop.

The story

Pure enchantment in a bottle, Floral Pleasure is arriving just in time for laying in fields of freshly blooming foliage and watching a long winter turn into a replenishing spring.

This aromatic and elegant blend of Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, and Gewürztraminer offers an all-encompassing, sensory journey with every sip. On the nose, the bouquet captivates right away with an array of subtle, and enticing floral aromas. Notes of orange blossom and honeysuckle are sprinkled with the freshness of newly grated lime zest. In the glass this wine displays a pale straw yellow, evoking the appearance of newly emerging daisies, primrose, and yellow dandelions. As you set up your picnic blanket and pour this in the sparkle of the spring sun, you'll already be under its spell before even taking a sip.

On the palate, this wine hits with a perfect balance of roundness and bright, clean elegance. Though a dry wine, the Gewürztraminer and Riesling present add a delicate sweetness, as if there was a subtle wild honey rinse in your glass. Grüner Vetliner adds that crisp acidity that keeps your lips smacking with delight and reaching for more. With a lightness that creates the illusion of your taste buds dancing on a cloud of intricate flavors, you can sip on this all afternoon as the sun begins to wind down and create whimsical shadows on the springtime blooms. As you drink, you'll notice notes of Meyer lemon, lime, beeswax, and minerality swirling on your palate.

This wine could be paired with a plethora of different springtime dishes, but it would be stunning accompanied by a spring salad full of fresh herbs, a fresh stone fruit salad with shiso leaf, or a spring ramp and pea pesto with freshly made pasta. Too lazy for all of that? As always, feel free to simply pair the wine with the goods from your favorite taco truck (shrimp tacos preferred!).

The story

Darling Don’t Cry beckons you closer, her vibrant lips and shimmering tears a testament to unspoken stories. This is a wine that defies expectations, inviting you to peek beyond the surface.

This enigmatic Petite Sirah-dominant red shimmers a bright cherry-ruby in your glass. The captivating color hints at the playful twist this blend holds, a result of a unique and meticulous winemaking technique called reverse saignée. Inspired by the traditional saignée method used for rosé production, this process involves adding fermenting Petite Sirah juice to a vat of whole cluster grapes.

Unlike the classic method where juice is removed for rosé, this "reverse" approach creates a carbonic maceration environment. This technique allows fermentation to occur under a blanket of carbon dioxide, minimizing oxidation and preserving the grape's delicate fruit character. This meticulous approach is a testament to the dedication and innovation of our winemaking team, resulting in a wine that captures the pure, fruity, juicy essence of Petite Sirah.

Grapes for this blend are meticulously sourced from Vine View Ranch in Yorkville Highlands AVA and Green Valley Vineyard in Solano County. Both vineyards flourish under coastal influence, experiencing cool nights and warm days with extended ripening periods. This translates to beautifully concentrated fruit flavors and exceptional grape quality.

On the nose, the wine transports you to a hidden garden. Earthy herbs like rosemary and lavender mingle with hints of vintage potpourri and a whisper of worn leather. Delicate rose petals and a burst of raspberry peek through, creating a fascinating and unexpected contrast.

The first sip is a revelation. Soft, plush, and pillowy, the wine caresses your palate with a symphony of flavors. Imagine strawberry preserves dancing a tango with decadent milk chocolate, a touch of earthy leather adding a touch of intrigue. This isn't your average wine; it's a captivating story unfolding with every sip.

This wine has a fierce spirit simmering beneath the surface of the tear-stained label. The finish lingers long, with a playful warmth dancing on your tongue, leaving a hint of quiet defiance lingering on your palate. Petite Sirah (PS) - Reverse Saignee - direct press PS juice covered the whole clusters of PS for 5 days of carbonic maceration (in contact with the fermenting juice). After the 5 days the direct press and newly pressed carbonic whole cluster juice went to stainless steel tank together and left to finish fermentation before being barreled down Zinfandel - all de-stemmed, extended maceration, normal extraction - 2 pump-overs per day at peak of fermentation, aged in neutral oak Valdiguie - foot stomped, whole cluster - extended maceration, normal extraction - 2 pump-overs per day at peak of fermentation, aged in neutral oak and 1x large wooden tank

G-Funk

Red Wine, California

The story

If you know like we know, you don't wanna step to this. It's the G-funk era, funked out with a garage twist.

Inspired by one of our favorite styles of hip-hop, we paired the hypnotic grooves of Syrah with the booming bassline of Petite Sirah, and a few other samples, to create a red wine that is ready to regulate. Mount up.

Our journey begins down on the central coast, where we (in a Nate Dogg voice) hit the west side of the S-L-O, on a mission trying to find some cool new vineyards. And let's just say, we hit the jackpot. Situated on the Pacific Ocean, the San Luis Obispo Coast region enjoys a cool maritime climate and diverse soils that produce wines with rich flavors and deep complexity.

There we found a number of grapes that thrive, including Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Grenache. These varieties form the dark juicy core of this blend. But it couldn't just be any geek off the street, we needed to funk it up, if you know what we mean. That's where we brought in the zest, intensity, and acidity of Négrette, Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, and Viognier to make this a groovy melody.

And it's damn good too. In the glass, it's got the dark purple paint coat of a '64 Impala. Poke your head in and soak up a complex and mouthwatering array of dark fruit aromas, accented by hints of red licorice and violets. Once it drops in your mouth, your tongue will be delighted by a rhythmic wave of raspberries followed by deeper flavors of blackberry and black cherry, with notes of cola, black pepper, and leather. The wine features a lush, velvety texture and a lingering finish. Basically, the rhythm is the bass and the bass is the treble.

We found too many parallels with G-Funk music not to make this wine an homage to the genre. Born out of Southern California, G-Funk paired groovy samples from '70s funk and R&B music with harder-hitting basslines and lyrics from '90s gangster rap. Artists like Warren G, Nate Dogg, and Dr. Dre defined the smooth, harmonic sound, that like our blend here, just get better with age.

Damn, what's next

Pét-Nat Sparkling White Wine, California

The story

Yo, ditch the corkscrew, this party's got a pop-top! Hella Fizz is a Pét-Nat bash in a bottle, a west coast celebration ready to erupt on your taste buds. It's a multi-vintage blend, a mixtape of grapes from 2022 and 2023 that's as fresh as a Mission mural.

For the wine geeks: This ain't your average bubbly. Hella Fizz is a Pét-Nat, which is basically the OG of sparkling wines. Forget fancy second fermentations and riddling – Pét-Nat keeps it simple. We bottle the juice before it finishes fermenting, letting the natural CO2 create those delightful bubbles. The result? A refreshingly light and funky sparkler that's perfect for any chill California occasion.

That first sip explodes with a burst of sunshine and perfume – juicy clementines dancing with fragrant jasmine, the smell of summer in the city. Gewurztraminer and Riesling bring the tropical vibes, then the Chardonnay and Greco Bianco weave in a smooth honeysuckle sweetness, creating a perfect harmony on the palate. It's like cruising down the 101, windows down, blasting California Love – a little bit of everything, perfectly blended.

Don't let the sunshine and honeysuckle fool you, this ain't no sugary cooler. Hella Fizz finishes dry and refreshing, like a cool Pacific breeze cutting through a hot California afternoon. It's a taste that lingers, reminding you of good times and endless summer days.

And the bubbles? Don't even get us started. Frothy and alive, they're like that feeling when your favorite band hits the stage at the Fillmore. Hella Fizz comes in a sleek glass bottle with a crown cap, ready to be popped open at Dolores Park or your next backyard BBQ. No fuss, just pure California fun.

So grab a bottle, crank up the tunes, and let the Hella Fizz vibes flow. Now that's what we're talkin' about!

2023 Skin-Contact White Wine, Solano County

The story

When it's Arcade Summer, every sip is a high score.

School just got out and the only plans on your calendar are playing pinball and locking lips with your arcade crush. You wish this free, retro feeling could last forever...and now it can.

A fun, crushable "orange" wine, Arcade Summer is all about groovy flavors. It owes its beautiful amber complexion to the "skin-contact" process, which extracts color, aroma, and texture. Traditionally with white grapes, the juice and skins are quickly separated after pressing. However, with "orange" wines, the two are left to ferment together like a red wine to soak up all that goodness. In this case, we let the different varieties intermingle with their skins for up to 7 days.

The main character for this particular game is Albariño from the McCormack Ranch Vineyard in Solano County. Albariño is an Iberian grape known for its botanical aromas, citrus undertones, and wonderful acidity. Let us tell you, this stuff thrives in the warm-summer Mediterranean climate and alluvial soils of McCormack Ranch. Combined with some Grenache Blanc, Trousseau Gris, Roussanne, and Viognier, this becomes a juicy, mouthwatering wine fit for any summer pool...or arcade.

Sporting a hue of orange you could only find in the '70s, this "orange" wine lives up to the billing. On the nose, soak up a sexy mix of floral and tropical aromas. Once you get this wine in your mouth, you'll know exactly what we meant by the term crushable. Explosive, juicy waves of tangerine, peach, nectarine, and citrus delight your tongue and a brisk acidity keeps things zesty and refreshing. The skin contact also brings a sexy tannic grip and depth, but we promise this thing is smoooooooth and satisfying. It really fingers our flippers.

For a wine this groovy, we had to go retro. And when it comes to capturing nostalgia, there's only one person we trust to nail the look and feel: Sita Kaylin. Our longtime collaborator, co-conspirator, and favorite person has a knack for capturing vintage aesthetics and moods. Speaking of which, please check out Sita's new book, Anything But a Wasted Heart. For this project, we told her we wanted to feel like we were back in 1979, hanging at the local arcade, jamming on a pinball machine without a care in the world. And after seeing this photo, we're back in time, soaking up every minute of the Arcade Summer.

The story

Hypnotic, unapologetic, yet graceful: Pretty Electric embodies a dance of defiance that ignites desire. This wine is bound to captivate you from the first glance at its powerful label to the last sip in your glass.

Dive into another world, full of intricate layers, textures, and hungry intrigue. Albariño and Viognier stand defiantly at the forefront of this juicy blend, showcasing stunning fruit that pays homage to the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. This area is known for its limestone-rich soils, which bring vibrant acidity and depth to this blend. The wine is rounded out with a touch of Gewürztraminer from our pals at McCormack Ranch in Solano County, on the banks of the Sacramento River Delta. This addition provides a slightly aromatic quality and crispness that lingers on the palate, sending fierce delights pulsing through your veins. One might even call it electrifying.

Pretty Electric opens with an enticing nose that conjures nostalgic memories of fresh-squeezed limeade, mingling harmoniously with the sweet aroma of stone fruits. An undercurrent of exotic floral notes pulses, hinting at its complexity and dualistic vigor. Upon the first sip, you'll notice a crisp and refreshing backbone with elegant minerality, begging to be enjoyed at your next impromptu poolside dance party. The wine’s richer fruit notes come to the forefront on the mid-palate, weaving in tropical flavors like guava and pineapple alongside white peach and apricot. The finish encapsulates all the complex flavors, adding a zippy citrus zest for that extra somethin’ somethin’. The bold nature of this wine embodies the unapologetic attitude of the woman's face captured within the lightning bolt, yet she and the wine itself remain hypnotic, drawing you back for sip after sip…

If wine could encapsulate a perfectly shaken, classic margarita, this would be it. The pretty acidity and citrus zest beg for the accompaniment of tacos, preferably of the seafood variety! This could also be excellent with a scallop crudo that involves freshly chopped jalapeños (if you’re feeling fancy). The bold nature of this wine can hold up to lots of big flavors, so experiment away with your food pairings. Feeling lazy? Fry up a classic cheese quesadilla, pop it open, and let yourself get swept away by the snake and the temptress calling you in.

Saint Astray

2023 Dolcetto, Mokelumne River, Kolber Vineyard

The story

Pray to be saved by Saint Astray.

On its own, this Dolcetto from the renowned Kolber Vineyard would be divine. But what if we told you there was something even more precious about it? What if we told you that this wine is FAMOUS?

That's right: famous. As in we foot-stomped these grapes LIVE ON TV. Last September, our friends from NBC Los Angeles's California Live hit us up and asked if they could come up for harvest to film us do our thing. Our response: "fuck yeah!" To which they replied, "Don't use that language on air."

But that was the least of our problems. We had to find some cool shit to foot-stomp first. While the TV people might have been thinking of the old I Love Lucy foot-stomping bit, our minds were drifting astray. Given the growing season and time of year, our local options were limited. But Bertus, our beloved winemaker, cooked up the exhausting idea to pick and haul Dolcetto grapes two hours from Lodi to Calistoga in time for the morning segment.

So, just past midnight on September 28, 2023, we journeyed to the Mokelumne River AVA of Lodi to pick some clone #4 Dolcetto. Home to dry-farmed vines, alluvial fan sand, a Mediterranean climate, and a delta breeze, Kolber Vineyard is a perfect spot for Italian varieties to develop their signature flavor and acidity. Hailing from the Piedmont region of Italy, Dolcetto is an early-ripening grape known for its mouthwateringly juicy fruit flavors and spice. After a quick pick and some vineyard selfies, Bertus and crew hit the road westward with a half-ton of delicious Dolcetto.

[Spongebob: Two Hours Later] and we rolled into Calistoga with a pick-up truck full of Dolcetto to foot-stomp with Jobeth Devera. After a quick setup and another reminder not to swear, we're LIVE ON TV, mashing up Dolcetto grapes in front of our gas pumps as passing cars honk and applaud. We tell Jobeth the rich history of Tank Garage Winery and how we're one of the only places left in the Valley that still foot-stomps.

Foot-stomping, an old-world technique, remains one of the best ways to gently crush grapes into juice without breaking the seeds. To ease any worries, we spray our feet with alcohol before hopping in and once fermentation starts, the alcohol wipes out any germs. Maybe a bit too rustic for a land of optically-sorted Cab, but perfect for when you're trying to keep it real. And we are happy we did it with this Dolcetto.

Before long, our segment wrapped up and our five minutes of fame came to an end. We crushed it though, both literally and metaphorically. Next, Bertus and crew loaded the bin back into the truck and set forth towards our production facility. Because Bertus had strategically kept several clusters whole at the bottom of the bin, we also had some highway carbonic magic transpire en route home. Back at the crib, we let everything ferment in bin for 3 weeks before pressing out to neutral French oak barrels.

We got something special here. In the glass there is a slight lightness, but no shortage of saturation with a beautiful ruby color shimmering through the wine. Next, soak in ripe cherry and plum aromas with subtle notes of violet and cumin spice. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine is silky in texture with bursting flavors of juicy red cherries and inky blackberry accentuated by mouthwatering acidity, herbs, and softly integrated tannins. The finish is smooth and lingering with pleasant minerality and spice. It's heavenly, really.

So heavenly, we decided to actually saint this wine. Saint Astray: our patron saint of rebellion, here to tell the detractors to fuck off. Symbolized by this protective angel flipping the bird to the haters below, Saint Astray wants you to know that it's OK to deviate from the normal path. Especially if that means foot-stomping Dolcetto and swearing on live TV.

2022 Red Wine, California

The story

“On California’s central coast, restless waves breathe like untamed dreams—surging with creativity, crashing with boundless energy.”

While the Bay Area and SoCal soak up much of the Golden State's notoriety, it is the Central Coast that may uphold the purest concept of California. And it is home to some of our state's most incredible vineyards.

The core of Restless Waves is Syrah from the Zeferino Vineyard in Arroyo Grande. This vineyard, just a few miles southeast of Pismo Beach, benefits from two of the Central Coast's most important features: the sea and the sun.

Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its breeze, this is a cooler area of California that paradoxically is also one of the warmest. During the growing season, the grapes bask in the warm California sun before cooler nights set. This variation in temperature leads to slower ripening, which creates concentrated fruit flavors and enhances acidity.

Syrah is known for its thick skins, dark color, and peppery notes. Combined with elements listed above and the diverse, well-draining soils in Arroyo Grande, we were blown away by the quality of the fruit we picked back in 2022. Combined with Zinfandel, Valdiguié, Petite Sirah, and a dash of Viognier and Négrette, this wine is a complex, but delicious creation.

Dark purple in color, a bouquet of black fruit aromas pour out of the glass. On the palate, soak in waves of blackberry cobbler, fresh blueberries, black cheery, plum, accented by Syrah's familiar black pepper spice and hints of clove. This luscious, plush red blend coats your mouth with energetic flavor with every sip. Which makes it a killer pairing with grilled meats and peppery BBQ.

Abstractly, we tried to capture the untamed beauty of the Central Coast on the label and celebrate its biggest assets: the radiant sun and the restless waves.

Onde Nostre

2022 Red Wine, San Benito County

The story

Non c’è niente come le nostre onde.

They say that there are no waves, like your own waves. And for us, there are no wines like our wines. Onde Nostre is a love letter to surfing and to Italian-style wines.

This beautiful wine is primarily comprised of Barbera, Sangiovese, and Freisa from San Benito County. There, we partner with the Siletto family and their unique collection of vineyards. This region is famous for its well-draining gravely loam soil, and its Mediterranean climate. Moderate winters, and warm summers pair with a marine breeze from the Monterey Bay, creating grapes with siiiick flavor concentration, perfect acidity, and gnarly complexity.

The Siletto vineyards are legendary, not only for their unique terroir and varieties, but also for their history. Calleri Vineyard (Barbera) hosted a secret distillery during prohibition, while Wheeler Vineyard (Sangiovese) was planted in the 1970s by Bob Wheeler. Much like a locals only surf spot, these are vineyards all the cool winemaking kids want to get into.

Barbera and Sangiovese are some of our favorite varieties, not just from Italy, but from anywhere. Their medium bodies, intense flavors, and mouthwatering acidity make for wines that are just plain fucking delicious...with or without food (we'll get to that).

From the time you take your first sniff, to when the wine hits your tongue, this beauty is all about cherries and raspberries. On the palate, enjoy tart cherry flavors, raspberries, and cranberry fruit flavors with smoothly integrated notes of oak, vanilla bean, marzipan and candied rose violets. Hints of black tea, peppercorn, and tobacco leaf provide a savory touch to this otherwise juicy wine. Medium body, medium-plus acidity, medium tannin, but medium-ultra with that oh so sexy finish. Pairing wise, you'll want to match this up with some lamb ragù, meaty lasagna, or eggplant Parmesan.

We often draw through lines between the art of both surfing and winemaking, and recently learned of the small but vibrant surf culture that exists in parts of Italy. Though not as famous as the scenes in California, Australia, or Hawaii, the surfers of the Mediterranean are equally passionate about their spots. The term "Onde Nostre" means "Our Waves." For fun, we went with a mafia-esque crew on the label, boards in hand, heading to their own waves.

Nothing gets the dopamine flowing quite like a trip to the local plant and flower emporium. We love getting lost in the green leaves, botanicals and little trinkets scattered about. This blend of Roussane, Marsanne, Viognier, Chardonnay and Grenache Blanc serves up all that and more –here to bring you a splash of sunshine and remind you that spring is soon on its way.

Plucked from the vines at David Girard Vineyard in early September, the grapes were delicately pressed to minimize skin contact and fermented in stainless steel tanks before aging 6 months in neutral French oak barrels.

This wine will have you kicking the winter blues and thinking of fresh blooms in no time. The color of creamy hydrangeas and pale yellow roses, Flowershop smells like misty mornings in spring, packed with notes of green apple, lime zest and orange blossoms.

We keep coming back to the varieties of Northern Rhone, and for good reason. As soon as this wine kisses your tongue, you’ll be met with a wave of kiwi, honeysuckle, and cotton candy with a zippy acidity and zesty finish. The wine is silky, yet crisp and clean. Pair it with Dungeness crab and spring vegetables and you’ll have a meal you won’t soon forget.

The story

Say your prayers, little one, let's pop some corks and have fun.

Perhaps it sounds immodest, but what's more iconic than the pairing of Shawn Barber and a Tank red wine? Well, we're back with the long overdue follow-up to wines like Eddie and All or Nothing. And it fucking rocks.

We wanted to target the trademark bold and juicy flavors of our previous collaborations and blended 71% Valdiguié, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Zinfandel, and 5% Sagrantino together to create a sonic wave of power for your tongue. The backing beat of Valdiguié creates a foundation of deep color, acidity, and red fruit and allows the Cab and Zin to absolutely shred.

But in a good way, you know? Because while this wine may be metal on the outside, once it is in your mouth it is all about silky smooth textures and intensity of flavor. Dark crimson in color, with wafting aromas of cherry pie, this thing pulls you into the glass. Once you're there, it bursts with head-banging flavors of blackberries, raspberries, vanilla bean, and white pepper spice. Smooth tannins lead to an irresistible finish.

It's the perfect homage to our love for all things heavy metal (well, except the suing Napster part). We love the intense, brooding sounds of bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and knew Shawn Barber did too.

Our history with Shawn goes way back to a wine called Ink. Which seemed appropriate, considering Shawn is one of the world's most accomplished and recognized tattoo artists.

Raised in upstate New York, Shawn has an interesting history with tattoos. When he was 14, he made a deal with his local parlor. He'd illustrate some artwork for them, and in exchange, they'd give him his first tattoo. It's of Spider-Man. It looks "OK."

Shawn soon became a tattoo artist himself, which helped him fund his growing passion for oil painting. His figurative style blends photorealism with abstraction, often depicting nude, tattooed (naturally) figures that are hauntingly expressive. Many of which can be found in the world's most respected private collections.

Today, Shawn tattoos and paints out of his Los Angeles shop Memoir Tattoo...and for some reason, is still down to work with Tank. Now that's living the Heavy Metal Life.

2017 Sparkling White Wine, Calistoga

The story

You've been waiting for this moment. The mood is set, the music is on, the candles are lit, and the wine is chilled. You grab two glasses, pop the cork, pour the bubbly and watch those SPARKS FLY.

Inspired by the Pop art movement of the '50s and '60s, we sought to produce a wine that would mirror the artists' aim to blur boundaries between "high" and "low" and abolish cultural hierarchies. Described by one famous artist of the time as "the American Dream, optimistic, generous and naïve", Pop reintroduced art to the masses with identifiable imagery celebrating everyday life.

In the wine world, "high" culture is often thought of as Grand Cru Champagne houses while the "low" sparkling producers outside of France cannot even call their wine champagne. We say to hell with that. Let's do away with this hierarchy of culture and celebrate the masses.

This blend of Sémillon, Verdelho, and Vermentino hits your nose with scents of graham cracker crust, shortbread, toasted brioche and a dash of honey. Small, mousse-like fizzies pop in your mouth like supermodels walking on clouds.

Find yourself falling in love with this zesty sparkling as white peach, honeysuckle, and orange blossom notes combine into a racy and exciting finish. It's so good, you'll think you're drinking a Grand Cru Champagne.

2017 Sparkling Rosé, Sierra Foothills

The story

This was our FIRST EVER sparkling Rosé. A wine for made for celebration, we went full Southern France on this sucker, taking some of our favorite varieties for making Rosé (Mourvèdre and Grenache) and including a little Counoise to soften the tannic structure. The nose is full of floral violets and rose petals while the palate exudes a great texture and minerality with a fuller body and enchanting effervescence. Expect bright red cherry and currant flavors with hints of plum and herb.

A Mirror Ball, aka a Disco Ball, is a geodesic sphere covered in pieces of mirror designed to reflect light as it spins. Nightclubs began hanging these in the 1920s, but they really shot into popularity during the disco-crazed 1970s. These beautifully reflective and colorful orbs seem to mirror the bright, glitzy characteristics of this wine.

2022 Red Wine, California

The story

‘Ay! Baby, don’t blow this popsicle stand. We got somethin’ here for the dames, the chumps, the mouthpieces, and the stool pigeons.

This wine takes us back to the days of classic film noir: femme fatales, doomed romances, suspicions, murders, double-crosses, and smooth car chases. Drama is in the air, and if delicious wines could kill, this would be our demise.

Just like the perfect noir, this wine has a lot of twists and turns…yet it’s reeeeal smooth, crushable, and captivating. This blend is Grenache and Mourvèdre dominant, giving it that juicy forefront. A bit of Cinsault and Syrah is thrown in there, so you don’t speed on into the depths of nighttime without a touch of something more decadent to explore.

We turned to carbonic maceration for this light and juicy style before pressing the grapes in stainless steel. This baby was aged for 5 months in French Oak, where her character development began to expand and flourish. While she may be young, this ain’t no flat damsel in distress. She’s strong-willed, with a mind of her own and a killer body to match.

In the glass, this wine is fine and delicate, with hues of cranberry and light rust. On the nose, this wine playfully teases with blueberry, plum tart, and a touch of oakiness, and it zooms into full throttle as soon as it hits the palate. Enveloping your entire mouth with silky and elegant tannins, this wine gives a complexity of emotion and passion in its flavor profile: cranberry and dark berry juiciness, baking spice, dark plum, and an undertone of earth and cedar. And the real climax of the narrative? The finish. It’s a cliffhanger: keeping you guessing, leaving it lingering, and begging you to return to the start to solve the mystery all over again.

2022 Gamay Noir, El Dorado County, Barsotti Vineyard

The story

Are you ready for the hot goss? Because it’s about to get JUICY up in here.

A rarity for Tank: We’re going single-varietal, and it’s one of our favorite varietals around, Gamay Noir. Originating from Burgundy, this grape is pure wine royalty when it comes to producing light-bodied, delicate, and subtle reds that keep on giving as you keep on drinking. And in California, we knew that for Gamay, we could only turn to one of the coolest of the cool-kid vineyards, and that is the Barsotti Vineyard in El Dorado County.

Located at 2,800’ elevation about the adorable small town of Placerville, Gamay was planted here in 2005, and the conditions are ideal for growing this precious fruit. The Vineyard blocks on site slope slightly towards the American River Canyon, where they catch the cool breezes from the nearby, snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains, and the climate reflects warm bright days that turn into crisp evenings, helping the grapes ripen slowly and meticulously. On top of that, the soils here are decomposed granite: mimicking similarities to the terroir of Gamay’s home region of Beaujolais, France. Seriously, if you want the juicy and bountiful long-lasting expression of this classic grape, this is where it’s at.

In the glass, Juicy unveils a captivating cherry red hue, hinting at its vibrant and lively character. On the nose is an enticing dance of strawberries, rhubarb, and cranberries, mingling with a slight hint of wet river rocks. This sensory experience transports you to the vineyard, where the marriage of the Gamay grape and illustrious granite soils create their magic. As you drink, the flavors envelop your palate with a tapestry of luminous flavors: red apples, sweet pomegranates, tangy, zesty cranberries, and a distinct presence of lingering minerality to balance it all out. The body is a perfect testament to the classic expression of Gamay – light and graceful, with a strong backbone of medium-bodied acidity, and a vibrance and liveliness that persists through each sip. After its beautifully lingering finish, you’ll only be thinking one thing “pass me the juice.”

To gain full appreciation for its complexities, this wine is best served just below room temperature. We’d recommended throwing it in the fridge for about 10-20 minutes before cracking it open to start digging into the goods.

Juicy is awesomely versatile when it comes to food. Get adventurous! It would be killer paired with Peking duck bao buns, or a savory/sweet Kung Pao chicken. If you want to keep it simple, it’s a beautiful accompaniment to roasted vegetable or stewed beans, with it’s medium bright acidity cutting right through rich textures and flavors. We also think it would shine brightly with Thai laarb and an accompanying green papaya salad.

2018 Red Wine, Russian River Valley

The story

Pour a glass, hold each other close, and watch the world fall apart together.

If you're anything like us, you had big plans, lofty dreams, and high hopes for 2020 that, well, probably got punched in the face. Now for 2021, we have a completely new mindset. Maybe it's because we're scarred and calloused from the past year, or maybe we've just lost our fucking minds, but if it's all gonna burn down, we're gonna enjoy it with the ones we love.

And we can't think of a better wine to do it with than High Hopes, a 2018 red blend that is dangerously drinkable. To make this nihilistic masterpiece, we went to the Russian River Valley and sourced Merlot from Wood Road Vineyard's 24-year-old blocks. Comprising 95% of this blend, we love Merlot for its body, soft tannins, and its range of flavors, which we'll get to. As a complement, Bertus found this killer Malbec from the Saureel Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills.

But the star here really is the Merlot. We really wanted to fulfill the full Bordeaux potential of this wine, so we aged it for 24 months in neutral French oak to really let it think about what it wanted to be when it grew up. And unlike us during adolescence, it made some good decisions.

Medium in body with a sexy scarlet hue, we're really stoked with how pretty this wine looks. It smells even better with fresh herbalicious (it's a word, google it) aromas blooming out of the glass. In your mouth, it's all about the bright, exuberant red fruit with punchy flavors of cherry and raspberry joined by notes of rosemary and sage. This is a Pinot lover's Merlot blend and we're happy to drink this all day until they come to arrest us.

Because we're stupid, we only made 295 cases of this amazing wine, so grab it before everything crumbles.

Forever Baby

2020 Forever Baby, Rosé, California

The story

It's you and me, Baby...forever. The groovy followup to Wasted Love and Stars Like Ours, our new, refreshing Forever Baby is the ride-or-die Rosé that's absolutely dripping with deliciousness.

Before the 2020 harvest started, we challenged our winemaking team to make sure this Rosé topped all of our previous efforts, and if you know anything about Bertus and his crew, it's that they take challenges very seriously.

It is our personal belief that the best grapes for making Provençal-style Rosé come from the Sierra Foothills. The summer's radiant heat assures a presence of bright fruit flavors and the soils, rich with decomposed granite, help create the crisp minerality and seashell-like salinity that we find delicious in Rosé. Plus, the Foothills never sold out and still have all the cool and weird varieties we all love.

For this year's Rosé, we put the spotlight on Grenache for its lovely citrus notes and strawberry flavors. This particular fruit came from the Saureel Vineyard, which sits about 1,500 feet above sea level. Next, we added Cinsaut from the homies at Snows Crossing Vineyard, which is a grape we love for its beautiful aromatics. Lastly, we completed the blend with our forever loves Mourvèdre and Counoise.

Let's take a sec to talk about Rosé philosophies. While some choose to simply bleed off juice as a by-product of their regular red wines (saignée), we feel that Rosé deserves to be deliberately made. So we select the best grape varieties, pick grapes at the ideal time, and then delicately whole-cluster-press our fruit to avoid extracting harsh textures and overwhelming color. It's a much harder and complicated method but assures us the purest expression of Rosé.

Now if you're looking for one word to sum Forever Baby up, it's sexy. A flirtatious perfume of rose petals, fresh strawberry, and lemon zest drips out of the glass. In your mouth, it's light, crisp, and refreshing, with sensuous flavors of strawberry candy, freshly peeled grapefruit, raspberry sorbet, and jasmine. And you better call up Sting, because this tantric finish lasts FOREVER.

After tasting it, we knew this Rosé was the one. A seductive, loyal, Rosé with vintage '70s swag like this doesn't come around very often. So we put a necklace on it and made it our Forever Baby.

2018 Rosé Sparkling Wine, Sierra Foothills

The story

The lights are dim, the hour is dark and you can see the flicker of adventure in their eyes. You hear the subtle sound of the glass rattling against the floor as you watch the bottle spin round and round, feeling the anticipation build with every turn. The bottle slowly comes to a decisive stop – it's your turn. Now the question is whether it's going to be truth...or dare.

Oh, Mourvèdre, our beloved Mourvèdre, you are the star of this blend. We source Mourvèdre from the up-and-coming Sierra Foothills region for many reasons, including its ability to lend color, fruit, and structure with only limited skin contact. Beyond that, there's an authentic and rustic quality to this grape that provides abundant flavor and complexity.

On the nose, expect notes of strawberry, rose petals and floral violets. These bubbles are crisp and satisfying with exceptional minerality and a hint of wild strawberry and cherry Jolly Rancher on the palate.

This marks our third collaboration with our friend and photographer Sita Kaylin, who previously shot Vinyl Love and Lick for us. She recently released an autobiographical book called “Anything But a Wasted Life,” which details her career and struggles working in the sex industry. This photo depicts an unknown person in stockings and heels standing in a motel hallway. We won’t say who it is, but it would definitely surprise you.

2018 Red Wine, Sierra Foothills

The story

This has been tough, exhausting, and heartbreaking. But our only way out is together.

Inspired by so many acts of selflessness and solidarity, we decided to make a wine to raise funds for the heroes on the front lines and the families who need support the most. We're putting our money where our mouth is here and donating all profits from This Too Shall Pass to the GlobalGiving Coronavirus Relief Fund.

With just 27 cases bottled and hand-labeled, this limited edition Red Wine blends 90% Graciano, 5% Cinsault, 4% Albariño, and 1% Verdelho, into a masterpiece of vibrant aromas and black fruit flavors. For the first time, we're going hard in the paint with Graciano, a Spanish grape from the Rioja region that flourishes in the Sierra Foothills and creates this plush black cherry and plum deliciousness accented by notes of chocolate and espresso. As you've seen us do a lot lately, we use lighter varieties like Cinsault, and white grapes like Albariño and Verdelho, to infuse acidity and freshness, creating a wine that's packed with cherry cola vibes.

For this label, we went back to the most OG Tank artist there is, Chip Sheean, who explains:

"The notion behind 'The Mask' piece is that the role of the artist is to be disruptive and find common things and make them uncommon. Our new normal is that for us to protect the ones we love, as well as our neighbors, the CDC recommends we wear a mask when out in public. I created this as a timeless symbol and as a reminder that even though we cannot see the entirety of everyone's face - behind every mask, there is beauty."

This Too Shall Pass is an ultra-limited-edition wine available on a first-come, first-served basis.

2019 White Wine, Calaveras County

The story

We wanted that summer to last forever.

A blend of 67% Treixadura and 33% Godello, Summer of '69 is a gorgeous white wine here just in time to keep the vintage summer vibes going.

Treixadura is a variety popular in Spain and Portugal, known for its medium body, full flavors, and citrusy aromas. Also hailing from Spain, Godello is known to produce drier, lighter wines with brilliant acidity and complexity. The two fell in love late last summer after Bertus discovered them growing together in the Sierra Foothills.

Metate Vineyard is a bit of a rebel. While many Calaveras County vineyards choose to focus on red varieties, Metate owner Michael Stange acquired a permit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to import these rare white varieties in 2006. In fact, his Godello vineyard is the only legit planting in the United States. While some questioned this decision, the two grapes thrive in the unique growing conditions of the Sierra Foothills. After a perfect growing season, we picked our fruit on October 4, 2019 and took it to press.

The wine itself is straight-up exotic and don't let the color deceive you, this wine is pretty thicc for a white wine. We pick up some sexy Makrut lime, Madagascar vanilla, gardenia, and freshly-baked waffle cone aromas and just a little spice. In the mouth, we dig the pineapple dole whip and white peach flavors, combined with a round mouthfeel and brisk acidity. Fans of our Petty Cash will dig the direction we took here. Pairs well with everything from sushi to paella.

For the label, we found this cool photo from 1969 of two young lovers kissing by the edge of the water. If you look close enough, the dude has a sweet snake tattoo. These weird times have us harkening back to the carefree excitement of 1969, which gave us the moon landing, Woodstock, and Abbey Road.

We bottled just 69 cases of this special white wine to preserve the free and exuberant spirit of summer.

Buena Onda

2019 Carbonic Carignan, Contra Costa County, Evangelho Vineyard

The story

These times...they're heavy, and if you're anything like us, there's a lot on your mind right now. But we'll be damned if we let it crush our souls. We've worked too hard and dreamed too big to let go now. So we choose to pursue Buena Onda. To worry less and smile more. To be grateful and compassionate to those that need it most, including ourselves.

To capture this mindset, we created a blissfully fresh red wine for the summer. Buena Onda is a 100% Carbonic Carignan from the legendary Evangelho Vineyard. Most widely grown in southern France, we love Carignan for its bright red fruit flavors and medium body, but Bertus wanted to get weird with this pick, so we didn't try to stop him.

Harvested at sunrise on September 5, 2019, our old vine fruit underwent Carbonic Maceration, a technique we used for wines like Some Girls and Going Home, where we place whole clusters of grapes into bins and tanks and pump in carbon dioxide to remove oxygen. This anaerobic environment causes the grapes to release an enzyme that converts the sugar into alcohol, which bursts the berries. After seven days, we pressed the grapes to stainless steel vessels, where native yeast finished the fermentation process. Sounds geeky? It is. But it's fking cool.

What's even more fking cool is where we got our Carignan from. Ask any Somm or winemaker about Evangelho Vineyard, and they will tell you it is as sacred as vineyards come. Some say it's California's greatest vineyard. This 140-year-old vineyard is sandwiched between a Burger King and the power plant from the Simpsons, but home to some of the oldest vines in California. Head-trained, and own-rooted, these gnarly old beasts grow in this beachy alluvial sand along the Sacramento River Delta in Antioch. Maybe it's the overhead power lines or the neighboring Motel that rents by the hour, but something about this place is magical, and the wines that come off the property must be tasted to believe are possible. Don't believe us? Then believe Esther Mobley.

So what's the vibe? Chill. Awesome aromas of cranberry, raspberry, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Then an explosion of bright red fruit, fresh sage, cardamon, tea leaves, and rose water flavors. The carbonic, juicy tannins are perfectly balanced and integrated across the palate, with this easy-going lightness carrying big bursts of fruit flavor. It's the type of red wine you'll slightly chill and sip out on your patio while watching the waves roll by. Maybe with some vinyl on, if you can.

To complement our Buena Onda ethos, we used a vintage flea market painting of a cool turquoise ocean for the label and bottled these in our popular shorty glass (and yes, they're 750 mL). Like many of our recent wines, Buena Onda is unfined and unfiltered, so don't be afraid if it's a little dirty. The whole project turned out better than we hoped for, and this will definitely be a wine Tank collectors will want in their stash. Only 43 cases made.

2020 Boys Cry, Carbonic White Wine, El Dorado County

The story

Emotions are relevant to our perception of wine. Don’t bottle it up. Pour it out.

Back in 2020, we released Going Home, our first carbonic macerated white wine from El Dorado County. Need a refresh on carbonic maceration? It is a winemaking technique typically used in red wines where whole clusters of grapes are sealed in a tank with carbon dioxide, forcing the berries to ferment from the inside out. Carbonic maceration is not often the method chosen for white wines because of the resulting funkiness. Due to a risk of adverse funkiness, unseasoned winemakers may shy away from using carbonic maceration with white grapes, but we’re not afraid of anything. And holy shit were we happy with the outcome. So... we did it again.

Boys Cry is our 2020 carbonic white wine, also from El Dorado County. Roussanne is the front runner hailing from the David Girard Vineyard. These vines sit at 1,350 feet in elevation on the southwest side of El Dorado only a few miles from Coloma, where the first gold was found back in the ’40s. Because the vineyard sits pretty low, the soils are pale, sandy, and made of decomposed granite instead of the volcanic soils found higher up the mountains. To round things out, we added Vermentino and the more obscure, Petit Manseng, which are both from the Saureel Vineyard, featuring younger vines nestled into the beautiful Sierra Foothills.

This wine smells like dismantling hegemonic masculinity. Just kidding. Boys Cry sweeps your nose with apricot, peach cobbler, lemon curd, orange blossom, and lime zest with a whiff of beeswax. When you take that first refreshing sip, you’ll notice that the citrus is amped up. Think crisp golden apples sprinkled with cinnamon in the heat of the summer. There is a persistent minerality that complements the bright and vivacious acidity and a finish that’s jivin’ for days.

With this label, we invite you to continue the dialogue about masculinity and emotion. Normalize boys hugging. Normalize boys needing each other. Normalize boys being feminine. Tokyo Love Hotel

2020 Tokyo Love Hotel, Pét-Nat Sparkling Wine, Clement Hills, Stampede Vineyard

The story

A Pét-Nat with an hourly rate.

You asked us to get weird, so we got weird. Tokyo Love Hotel is a fun, bubbly red wine for all you secret lovers out there.

On the heels of Come, Saints and Sinners, we wanted to make a Pét-Nat from another heritage vineyard site. But this one needed to get kinky. So we had to turn to the experts, brothers Jeff and John Perlegos, owners of the Stampede Vineyard in the Clement Hills AVA of Lodi.

Certified by the Historical Vineyard Society, this vineyard was originally planted by J.J. Zechmeister and C.H. Suess in the 1920s. Its location is one of our favorites, nestled between the southern embankment of the Mokelumne River and the legendary Clements Buckaroos Rodeo Grounds, which is home to the biggest amateur rodeo in the country.

This own-rooted vineyard is dotted with a dozenish heritage grape varieties including Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Mission grapes, and some other unidentified shit. Now if you’re thinking like we’re thinking, there’s only one thing to do with a vineyard like this: field blend.

With traditional blends, we will pick each variety separately, often on different days, and then combine them at a point in the future after they’ve been individually pressed. With a field blend, it’s “fuck it, we’ll do it live!” as we pick all the grapes together, piling them into the same bins, leaving their fate to destiny.

But wait, it gets stranger. As an experiment, we split our field blend into two lots. One that would be traditionally pressed and left on the skins and another that would be carbonically macerated to accentuate the freshness of the grapes. With carbonic maceration, we place the grapes into sealed tanks and pump in carbon dioxide to force out oxygen. Deprived of this resource, the grapes will release an enzyme and the individual berries start to burst and self-press through gravity.

Here’s where the story goes off the rails. From there, we decided to combine both lots to make it into a pét-nat sparkling wine. With this process, we bottle the wine before it completes its first fermentation, which naturally infuses the wine with bubbles. This differs from “méthode classique” where sugar is added to still wine to force a second fermentation. Who has time for that?

The checklist so far... We got a semi-carbonic macerated pét-nat field blend from a certified historic vineyard. See, we told you it was weird.

But strangely, the result is just plain delicious. Big mouthwatering aromas of wild cherry and blackberry candy bubble from the glass. In your mouth, it’s got a zangy intensity of flavor with those fresh flavors of blackberry, raspberry woven into small delicate bubbles. It’s like a Lambrusco plus skittles and we love it!

So what’s with the name? Well during our harvest walk with the Perlegos, we discovered that they once took monthly business trips to Tokyo. Trying to relate, one of us then told the brothers about a recent trip to this amazing city where they and their partner had stayed at a Love Hotel. You know, an hourly hotel with romantic kitsch decor designed for two (or more) lovers to sneak away for a short consensual tryst...sometimes involving toys, costumes, and karaoke. Perhaps an hour is a long time to delve into the complex details of this experience, but when we finally shut up, Jeff and John looked at us like we were out of our minds. So we promised them we’d name their wine Tokyo Love Hotel and paired it with this photo made by a Japanese street artist who is based out of Russia. Weird, we know, but we warned you.

2019 MDNA, Mixed Blacks, Dry Creek Valley

The story

Someone tell Aunt Karen to clutch her pearls because the Lady Madonna is getting a new look.

While some get a little sensitive when we delve into religious matters, we say fuck it. MDNA is a mixed blacks mashup of 56% Zinfandel, 25% Petite Sirah, 12% Syrah, 5% Carignan, and 2% Malbec from Dry Creek Valley, located in Sonoma County, CA. The concept of mixed blacks is about as old as winemaking itself. For centuries, farmers have harvested and fermented whichever grapes were planted in their fields. This trend carried over to the United States in the late 19th century, where vineyards were planted with Zinfandel and lesser-known varieties like Petite Sirah and Carignane interspersed.

So what’s it like? It definitely hits different than that sip of sacrament you’d receive at an alter. Deep purple in color, aromas of cinnamon and macerating blackberries and wet rocks entice you with every inhale. The first sip is like biting into a juicy cherry in summer, with a bit of pepper, cassis, and vanilla sprinkled in. Trust us, you won’t want to put this glass down.

We worked with renowned artist René Garza to create this simple collage depicting Lady Madonna sucking on a tootsie pop. To really make this Renaissance/pop mash-up shine, we gloss varnished a satin shimmer label and topped it all off with a gold capsule.

The story

Welcome to the Temple of Flora. 💐

This exquisitely rare wine is 100% Cabernet Pfeffer sourced from Enz Vineyard, which contains some of the only plantings in existence. No joke – there are only twelve acres of Cabernet Pfeffer planted anywhere. Enz Vineyard is located in Lim Kiln Valley near Hollister, CA. This vineyard is home to some of the oldest grape plantings in California, with vines dating back to 1886. Once forgotten, the plantings were re-discovered by the Enz family when they purchased the property in 1967. The soils on this property are just as unique as the grapes planted – a combination of Limestone and Granite soils give the wine both beautiful acidity and minerality. Dry farmed with organic practices, we are incredibly grateful to have happened upon such special grapes.

So what the hell is Cabernet Pfeffer anyways? As it turns out, the wine world is still trying to figure that one out. Sometimes referred to as Gros Verdot or Pinot St. George, some believe this mysterious little variety is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Trousseau created by horticulturist William Pfeffer. However, DNA testing at California UC Davis has determined the grape is identical to the rare Bordeaux variety Mourtaou and shares no relation with Cabernet Sauvignon. All confusion aside, you’re not going to forget tasting this medium-bodied lively red wine – this one's special.

Harvested in September 2019, we utilized partial whole-cluster fermentation and aged the wine in neutral oak for 20 months. To be honest, we didn’t know if there would be any wine left to bottle because once we tasted a barrel sample, we just couldn’t get enough. If you’re a fan of the classic black pepper + cherry notes often found in Zinfandel, Syrah and the like, you’ll love Temple of Flora.

Ruby red in color, Temple of Flora glimmers like sunshine on morning dew. On the nose this wine reminds us of walking through a rose garden, surrounded by cedar trees and a touch of ocean air. Dried cherries, a touch of cinnamon and a whole lot of black pepper envelope the palate in a silky embrace. The finish lingers, with an almost piquant acidity. Inspired by the marriage of flavors, we instantly knew this wine would go well with mushrooms. So, we hit up our friends over at Foggy Dew Fungi for a pairing and were blown away with how well the wine went with their Oyster Mushroom Duxelles Crostini with an Herbed Goat Cheese + Balsamic Reduction. Seriously, you gotta try it.

The name ‘Temple of Flora’ and the artwork depicted on the bottle come from Robert Thorton’s New illustration of the sexual system of Carolus von Linnaeu, which includes lavish depictions of flowers interwoven with poetic odes to nature’s beauty. Much like the delicate blooms enjoyed for fleeting moments in spring and summer, this wine will not be available for long. With only 25 cases made, each bottle is a rare specimen.

2015 Gran Reserva Tempranillo, Lodi

The story

We have kept a big secret for over half a decade. This is it.

La Soñadora is our Gran Reserva Tempranillo, the culmination of five years of hard work, patience, and hope. While we are passionate about pushing the boundaries and barriers of our craft, traditional winemaking remains the foundation for who we are and what we do. The dream to produce this wine harkens back to 2015, a year after we first rolled up our door, back when we didn't know if we would survive long enough as a business to see its release. And for that reason, no wine we have made is as precious to us as this one.

For over five years, this Tempranillo has been here by our side, evolving with us through all of our own joys and heartbreak. Its steady presence in our cellar linked the many incredible human beings who tended to it and all of the people who have shared in our journey. Through the years this wine has seen us get married, have families, buy houses, argue over three presidents, and fight wildfires.

More than anything ever born from our humble garage, this wine isn't just from us, it is us. The physical embodiment of what it means to "never dream alone." Appropriately, we have blessed this wine with the title of La Soñadora, Spanish for "the dreamer." And after a long wait, it is finally time to share this wine with you. Thank you for supporting us, for keeping us afloat to witness this release, and for dreaming along with us. It is our hope that La Soñadora may now share in your life's most important memories and dreams, as it has with ours.

Oh, and before you ask whether this wine really deserves to cost $85 per bottle, the answer is fuck yeah it does.

Ok, enough tears, let's get into why. Crafting Gran Reserva (or Riserva) wines is a tradition that traces back to the Rioja region of Spain. There they employ a classification system for their wines built around quality and aging. Tempranillo is a versatile grape and its zippy fruit flavors can be used to make a young fresh wine or a wise aged wine with softened tannins and deep flavor. In Rioja, wines with no or little aging, carry generic or "Crianza" classifications. Wines that enjoy 3 years of aging bear the "Reserva" classification. Then, at the very top sits, "Gran Reserva," which requires 5 years of aging, with at least 2 of those years in oak barrels.

For this project, our Tempranillo came from an immaculate old vine vineyard in Lodi. Harvested during the middle of the 2015 harvest season, we guided our fruit through traditional pressing before sending the wine to its new home inside of a couple of French oak barrels where it would remain for 5 long years. To put this in perspective, a typical Cabernet Sauvignon is in barrel between 6 and 30 months. Our Tempranillo was in barrel for 60. During this time, the wine's tannins soften and take in the wonderful oak characteristics only found in Gran Reserva productions. We knew this would be a long process, but hoped its rewards would be worth the wait, and after 5 long years, we finally discovered that it was.

Dark ruby in color with hints of brick red around its edges, La Soñadora looks and smells like a perfectly-aged wine. On the nose, deep aromas of black cherry tango with hints of espresso and oak. On your tongue, La Soñadora truly sings, with sexy flavors of cassis and huckleberry, notes of cherry, and complex rosemary herb, spice, and leather. Oh, shit, we forgot about the tannins. The whole reason we did this. The tannins and oak flavor in this wine are extraordinary, a level of perfection that only waiting on this fucker for 5+ years is capable of delivering. Not only is this wine a piece of art, it's a goddamn masterpiece of winemaking.

We knew we had to go all out on the label, so drawing on our Gran Reserva inspiration, we uncovered a vintage cigar box label featuring a composition of a Spanish woman, our dreamer, framed by ornate gold embellishments. It struck us so much that we had to recreate it, and it is truly the most beautiful label we have ever made. We even added something as a reminder to our supporters that we will always love you. The story

There’s no place quite like home, so for this one, we’re repping the ‘hood hardcore. Calistoga produces some of the best Grenache in the entire world. During the daytime, our vines are obliterated by heat, but come nightfall, they’re chilled to the bone. This emotional roller coaster produces Grenache that oozes with depth, soul and flavor. Now, never to be basic, we decided to whole-cluster ferment the grapes, meaning we left them on their stems during the fermentation process. This old world process adds an earthy complexity to the wine that we know you’ll really dig.

We didn’t plan on making this wine, but after the Northern California wildfires ripped through our community in October 2017, we knew we had to. Facing Fire honors the people of Napa and Sonoma county; those that fought, those that lost everything and those that extended a helping hand. Featuring a rag-tag bucket brigade, our label captures the brave efforts and spirit of a community that refused to back down in the face of devastation. We would like to thank artist Kathleen Judge, MCC Labels and Outshinery for their generous contributions to this project.

A portion of the proceeds from this wine will go to victims of the California wildfires.

Stars Like Ours

Your summer's about to pop off with our first Pét-Nat Sparkling Wine.

First of all, what exactly is Pét-Nat? Good question. Short for Pétillant Naturel and translated to "Natural Sparkling," this is the OG French method of making sparkling wine and dates back to the early 16th century. While most sparkling wines have their effervescence added during a second fermentation, Pét-Nat wines are bottled before they complete their first fermentation and the bubbles are produced by natural sugars in the grape juice.

Weird, right? Well, that's why we did it. The process is laborious, expensive and hard. The first two times we attempted to make a Pét-Nat, things didn't go as planned. Two years of learning and refinement later, we finally perfected the craft and the result is Space Crush.

Our friends from Babcock Ranch in Solano County hooked us up with a few small lots of their celestial Riesling. After some manual foot-stomping and a run through the basket press, the fermentation process began. After a few weeks, we moved the juice to bottles where the fermentation continued.

How'd it turn out? OH MY GOD. We nailed this one. It's fresh, crisp and complex with a floral perfume and green apple, peachy notes that endlessly orbit around your mouth. The texture is fascinating, the bubbles so satisfying and the finish extends to the moon.

The label is fit for a Warhol exhibit. Since our first Pét-Nat was so out of this world, we decided on a retro cosmonaut theme, available in three mod colorways. The fun part? You'll receive a completely random color when you order.

Space Crush is a natural wine and was not fully filtered. Because of this, there will be sediment inside each bottle from the Pét-Nat process that tells you it is legit. It's dirty, embrace it.

1. After delivery, let Space Crush rest upright for as many days as possible prior to opening.
2. Chill the living hell out of it prior to opening, preferably upright.

The story

When we set out to do something, we tend to do it with a little flash, a bit of boldness and a lot of swagger. This time, we decided to add some bling.

Back in the day, petty cash was kept on hand for small incidental business costs like buying milk, coffee for the staff, or postage stamps for the office. Some of these vintage coin boxes were super flamboyant with rich gold tones and sparkling rhinestones. With that type of style, you'd assume these bad boys would hold more than scratch change and a few 20s. We'd like to think the petty cash box of today might carry on with this design trend but serve as keepers of f*ck you money instead of spare coins to grab your boss a new stapler.

Inspired by a gold-foiled 1960's petty cash box that would make Elvis swoon, we set out to create a wine that was cool, crisp and rich. Stashed inside you'll find flavors of tropical fruit, guava, pineapple, and apples. 50% Vermentino, 32% Verdelho, 15% Grüner Veltliner, and 3% Gewürztraminer, this wine is round and supple, with lush textures balanced by fresh acidity. Too Much To Dream

NV Red Wine, Napa Valley

The story

You and me, buddy, we're dreamers. Dreaming keeps us moving forward. And if dreams are the contemplation of doing great things, then having too much of that is not such a bad thing at all.

Inspired by this idea, we spent an evening carting around a delicate neon sign with the simple phrase “I HAD TOO MUCH TO DREAM LAST NIGHT,” carefully propping it up in unusual places like laundromats, back alleys and even at an obscure power station we happened to trespass into. While most were home asleep, we wandered seedy locales (one of us almost got stabbed) and captured these guerrilla-style photos. What does it mean? Who the hell knows, but we think it turned out cool.

We decided to make a wild non-vintage blend without constraints. Continuing to do things differently, we blended in 8 different varieties, layering in flavors, aromas, and spices upon one another with the thought that you really can’t have too much of a good thing. The wine broods with black fruit aromas with hints of milk chocolate and licorice. Spicy, ripe berries saturate your mouth with chocolaty framboise, balanced acidity, and soft lingering tannins.

2018 Chenin Blanc, Mendocino County, Enlightenment Mountain Vineyard

The story

Chenin Blanc gets enlightened.

Sitting less than a mile away from the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Ukiah, one of the largest Buddhist communities in the Western hemisphere is the Enlightenment Vineyard. The name seems pretty on-brand, right? This vineyard exudes so much goodness that even the surrounding streets are named accordingly: Kindness Avenue, Patience Way, and Proper Thought.

Originally planted as Valdiguié, the now 85-year-old vines were grafted in 1980 to produce Chenin Blanc. Farmed naturally and organically, we picked and whole-cluster-pressed our Chenin Blanc using native yeast fermentation in a barrel with a partial natural malolactic fermentation to create a wine that’s both fresh and creamy.

Which is fitting for a wine from this vineyard. The locals believe that one can reach enlightenment by following the “Middle Way,” which means avoiding extremity in either direction. Simple living means being at peace with what you have and avoiding excess, and that’s the mentality we brought to Bohdi.

On the nose, Bohdi exudes a bouquet of honey, jasmine tea, and green apple. As you sip, you’ll revel in notes of vanilla and pineapple with a hint of brown sugar. Bohdi bodes brilliant acidity and clean minerality, the perfect pair for a creamy Main Lovester roll from Sushi Mambo, just down the road from the garage (yes, it does have lobster, shrimp, AND crab topped with a miso dressing).

In case you were wondering about the spelling of Bohdi...well, there are a lot of explanations we'll save for another day. So let's just say we like to put our own spin on things, hence, the most badass punk rock, Mohawk-sportin’ monks featured on the label.

With a bottle of Bohdi, it’s easy to live simply, find your Zen, and enjoy a dose of liquid enlightenment.

Let's be honest, the most fun part of a good song is often when you get to belt out some "na na"s, "doo doo"s or "la la"s unabashedly. To us, belting those simple choruses out is unbelievably liberating and satisfying. Inspired by the 1985 Simple Minds hit song, Don't You Forget About Me, I Say La LaLa La La represents those moments and memories that can't always be put into words.

This blend is a killer classic take on all the big hits of the Napa Valley: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Just like those cool lyric-less choruses, this top-of-the-charts wine allows the taster's mind to wander where it will–guided by the winemaker's hand–but not forced into a specific narrative. Aromas of cassis, graphite, cedar, and tobacco make way for layer upon layer of sweet blackberry and vanilla on the palate, followed by warm baking spices like cardamom, nutmeg, and red licorice.

The story

Unbound by the longstanding—and sometimes senseless—tradition of wines made from a single vintage, this red wine is “non-vintage,” comprised of stellar juice from multiple years. You know, a little of this, a little of that. We combined eight different varieties to create a wine layered with spice and fruit, with irresistible elegance drawing you subliminally into its orbit. A true believing in the theory that there is strength in numbers.

The front label features a photograph of California fruit packing laborers, who organized to improve wages and working conditions in the 1930s. The dedication, pride and heart you can see in each of their eyes is what gets to and inspires us. Oh, and you might notice the word “NAPPA” on the back-label with an extra “P.” Some might call it a typo, we like to think it adds to the wine’s theme.

2021 Red Wine, Amador County, Shake Ridge Ranch

The story

Come ride life's waves, one sunset at a time.

It's been a long time since we released something this rare, but this wine was worth the wait. A bodacious blend of Tempranillo and Graciano, this one-time bottling was hand-made for all you surfers and sunset chasers out there.

Of the many beautiful things to come from Spain, Tempranillo is one of our favorites. It's up there with the works of Goya and jamón ibérico. Its herbaceous, fruit-forward nature makes it an excellent food-pairing grape, and its tannic structure makes for graceful aging and velvety textures. And lucky for you, we know where to get the best Tempranillo in California.

Under the stewardship of viticultural legend Ann Kraemer, Shake Ridge Ranch is one of the most iconic vineyards in the United States. Rooted in ancient volcanic soils, at 1,800 feet of elevation, Ann farms this site with sustainable practices and the mastery that only somebody with her experience is capable of. The alpine air creates a longer growing season, helping our fruit develop fresh acidity, plush texture, and amplified flavors. Add in a splash of Graciano for color and spice, and you get a creation to be stoked about.

Crack open the wax-dipped top and paddle in. Once poured, deep garnet hues fill a rim of vibrant ruby red color. Sink your nose in and soak in the medley of dark cherries, ripe plums, violets, and dried herbs. Once it's time to kick back and take a sip, you'll soak in intense flavors of cherries, blackberries, and plum gently hugged by tobacco and leather. The wine's structure is well-defined, with medium-plus tannins that are velvety in texture, and a balanced acidity that ensures freshness and longevity. Oh, and that finish? It'll linger like a California sunset.

Sundown Somewhere captures the melancholy beauty of fleeting moments, the wistfulness of endings, and the hope that arises with every sunset — because even as the sun dips below one horizon, it heralds the dawn elsewhere.

For a wine this poetic, we turned to a fabled name in the world of art and surf: Cliff Summers. A true, sun-kissed golden boy, Cliff was synonymous with California surf culture throughout the '70s and '80s, catching waves by day and capturing their essence in watercolor by night. His abstract renditions, swirling with deep blues and sunlit golds and pinks, weren’t merely depictions of the ocean but were reflections of the raw, unbridled spirit of the surfers and the sea they danced upon.

With a daring spirit akin to Laird Hamilton and the poetic introspection of Hemingway, Summers lived by the idea that if you can't control the wave, you can always ride it.

Summers' modern-day whereabouts remain a mystery to all but a small group of surfers. Some say you can catch him riding the last set off the shore of Haleʻiwa, some say he caught a wave to Mexico. Wherever he is, we know he's chasing a sundown somewhere.

The story

Is it hot in here or is it just us? 🥵

Your tongue will moan with pleasure after one sip of Fever Dream, a 2021 Mixed Whites Pét-Nat from Saureel Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills. Unlike other sparkling wines like Champagne, Prosecco and other domestic bubbles, Fever Dream is made using old-school methods – bottling the juice while it's still fermenting and allowing nature to do its thang.

Let's talk for a minute about why we're absolutely obsessed with this winemaking style. There's something inherently wild about the tiny, delicate bubbles one can only find in pétillant natural wine. Since we're utilizing the grapes' natural microflora, the resulting wine is exotically aromatic, crisp and totally unconventional.

We believe that some of the best grapes in California are found in the Sierra Foothills, and Saureel Vineyard is the ideal growing site for high acid white varieties like the Picpoul and Vermentino found in Fever Dream. High in elevation with rich volcanic soils, the scorchingly hot days and cool nights help develop intense flavor, structure and puckering acidity, which is exactly what we were looking for with this wine. We co-fermented the Vermentino and Picpoul for a smooth and integrating effect and bottled the wine when it reached ideal sugar levels to allow the fermentation process to finish in the bottle and naturally carbonate the wine.

Going with our au natural look, we bottled this tantalizing wine unfined and unfiltered to preserve every drop of its magical goodness. So, in case you were wondering, yes it is supposed to look like a lemon-hazy kaleidoscope of light in the bottle. Embrace it. You'll soon find that we bottled liquid sunshine, adorned with celestial bubbles that taste like you're drinking the stars themselves.

On the nose, you'll get delicious whiffs of citrus, white peach, and those sweet tarts we used to stuff into our pockets when roaming the aisles at the corner store (😏...you didn't?). In your mouth, it's got those lemon head and pixie stick kinda vibes mixed with an almost vanilla-like creaminess that perfectly compliments the frothy bubbles. This wine is absolutely delicious (and low in alcohol!), so we suggest scoring a haul of bottles to last you through the summer before this sucker sells out for good.

In the spirit of shedding inhibitions and embracing a never-ending summer mindset, our label features a bodacious 🍑 kissed by the sun from our artist friend Poppy Faun. Howdy, y’all! Goodness gracious, Heavens to Betsy! We sure hope you’re ready for a honky tonkin’ wine made for a darn rootin’ tootin’ time. A galactic blend of 58% Malbec, 14% Petite Sirah, 10% Valdiguié, 9% Syrah, 9% Alicante Bouschet, this California red wine will send your taste buds rocketing into outer space.

Honky Tonk Girl is as pretty as a peach and finer than frog hair split four ways. Raspberries, blackberries, and tobacco meteor out of the glass. Smooth, with leather and pepper on the tongue, this red wine has an abundance of luxuriant tannins and structure that’ll make you throw a hissy fit fixin’ for a good ole’ pulled pork sandwich and slaw. You’ll surely have a hankerin’ for this celestial Malbec beaut ‘til the cows come home.

Honky Tonk Girls were women who entertained cowboys in saloons, later called honky-tonks, during the 1800s in Texas. In her debut 1960 single, Honky Tonk Girl, Loretta Lynn, undeniably one of the biggest female country stars of all time, detailed how a woman expresses grief and what a damn good drink could do to fill the emptiness. She wrote the song using a seventeen-dollar guitar that her husband bought her as an anniversary present.

It's time to fuel up your soul and hit the road.

Harkening back to our roots, Soul Fuel is a dark, luscious Napa Valley blend that is a complete throwback to wines like All or Nothing. That's right, we're back to big Zinfandel blends and vintage motorcycles, and it feels so good.

You love Zinfandel. We love Zinfandel. Everybody loves Zinfandel. So we made it the core of this wine. The fruit we got for this blend comes from the legendary valley floor where it enjoyed hot days and cool nights during the growing season which created the intensely concentrated blueberry flavor in this wine. With every sip, we lament the demise of Zin in the NV. This shit used to be everywhere, but more and more, vineyards have replaced it with Cab. Money talks, but we digress.

Next up in the blend is some peppery Syrah we sourced from the Carneros region, plus some Petite Sirah from Calistoga for tannins, and then a dash of Tempranillo, Primitivo, and Grenache.

From a winemaking perspective, our winemaker Bertus will tell you this is all about extraction. Through it, we have brooding color, alluring aromas, and dark flavor. On the pallet, it's basically a blueberry milkshake with deep flavors of blueberry and raspberry intertwined with mocha, exotic spice, and white pepper. Perfectly integrated tannins and a satisfyingly long finish make this. This is the right stuff to fill you up.

So what is soul fuel? We believe that too often people find themselves burnt out, and that sucks. But we believe burnout comes not from doing too much, but from doing too little of what you love. You know, the shit that makes you smile. The shit that makes you present. The shit that makes you feel invigorated. That's soul fuel.

And for us, you can call us basic, but we fucking love vintage motorcycles. Yeah, yeah, thanks, captain obvious. We love them so much we built a winery about it. So we dug up one of our oldest unused photos from when we were the first opening of some dudes on their bikes, on a dirt flat. Nothing but speed and excitement ahead. Go fuel up.

The story

All we need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and we're fine.

The funny thing about life is that sometimes you just gotta let the waves come to you. And that's exactly how Pray for Surf came to be. Our story starts in August of 2021, in the Sierra Foothills, where we source most of our fruit for our Rosé each year. We didn't realize it then, but we were picking some of the most incredible Mourvèdre we had ever come across.

The thing we have found about Mourvèdre is that if you give it enough sun, heat, and water, it produces intensely flavored fruit with excellent acidity and beautiful color. And lucky for us, our friends at Sierra de Montserrat Vineyard know exactly what the fuck they are doing when it comes to growing Mourvèdre.

Our original plan was to blend it in with our Wild Child Rosé, but after pressing the fruit and tasting the juice for the first time, our winemaking team fought hard for this to stand on its own as a limited-production Rosé. After cutting in just a little bit of Grenache and Cinsault, we nearly effortlessly found ourselves with the best Rosé we had ever made.

There are so many things that set this Rosé apart. The first thing is the color, with a sun-kissed golden hue that is unlike any Rosé we have ever produced. Next, aromas of ripe cherries, rose petals, and herbs flow out of the glass. Once you take a sip, intense flavors of freshly cut strawberries and wild raspberries wash across your tongue with notes of honeydew and a refreshing minerality. Seriously, the finish on this is so satisfying.

Spending a lot of time in small surf towns, we always loved the "Pray for Surf" mantra. There's just something so simple, peaceful, and spiritual about praying for waves and letting them come to you on their own terms. We saw a lot of parallels between our philosophy on winemaking and how this Rosé came to be.

For the label, we worked with one of our oldest, and closest friends, surf photographer Marco Arellano. Y'all may remember him from The Art of Surfing wine from a few years back, but Marco has made a name for himself capturing surf culture across the North Shore of Oahu with epic, naturalistic imagery unlike anything else out there. He captured surfer Alexia Jeri patiently staring out on the horizon, waiting for the next swell to roll in and bless her board.

Pray for Surf is our most proud achievement in Rosé winemaking and is available in limited quantities for a limited time.

Ancestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

The story

Sometimes, we know a wine is gonna be a hit, but Ancestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is gonna leave reverberations that will forever be etched in Tank's history. It's that good. Old school Tank peeps, remember Pop-Nat? This is that on steroids.

And that's what we told Bertus and his team to make. Electric strawberries, watermelon Jolly Ranchers, and pop rocks in a glass. Make this dream a reality. For that, they knew it had to be Barbera. This Italian grape is iconic for its juicy fruit flavors and mouthwatering acidity, and when you got the plug on the best Barbera vineyards in El Dorado, there is no way to avoid a wine that is a masterpiece.

For our effervescence, we turned to the OG: Méthode Ancestrale, or as you may know it, Pét-Nat. This technique is the predecessor to the Méthode Champenoise that is commonly used in modern sparkling wines but is in our opinion a lot cooler. After pressing Barbera to extract just the perfect amount of color and texture, we bottled the fermenting juice and allowed it to complete this one and only fermentation in the bottle. While modern methods involve a step of adding sugar and starting a second fermentation, Méthode Ancestral hits the jumper on its first shot, creating a more rustic wine with delicate bubbles.

And let us tell you, THIS THING IS FUCKING WILD. Like, the most delicious, refreshing thing that may ever go inside your mouth. Right out of the bottle, its neon pink color and frothy bubbles are otherworldly. Take a whiff, and you'll be treated to sexy and inviting aromas of wild strawberries while bursting bubbles tickle your nose. But like we said, the real party starts in your mouth as this electric pink cookie juice zips over your tongue, treating you to refreshing flavors of fresh-cut strawberries, watermelon candy, and apricots, with a brisk minerality and exhilarating pop. This shit is straight-up orgasmic. You need to try it for yourself.

When we close our eyes and think of this wine, we picture a dark sexy scene and vibrant neon lights washing over us as we dance in the dark. And for a wine like this, the worthy successor to Pop-Nat, you know we needed a label that absolutely glows with sex appeal.

2021 Skin-Contact White Wine, San Benito County

At Tank, we live for joy and happiness. We live for kindness and compassion. We live for authenticity, creativity, and individuality. Eminently at our core, we believe we are truly human when we live for love.

We also very much LIVE for orange wine. Harvested in September of 2021, these white grapes from Siletto Vineyard were foot-stomped and aged for 8 months with 100% skin contact and 100% malolactic fermentation in neutral French oak barrels (aka BBLs 😜). As a reminder, orange wine is a white wine made just like red wine, which provides more tannin structure and body than most white wines that don't have skin contact. Siletto houses 34 varieties from 5 unique and organically farmed vineyards, planted in earthquake-shaken gravelly loams along the San Benito River and Tres Pinos Creek in San Benito County. Grapes were first established in the rugged landscape of San Benito County by French and German immigrants in the mid-1800s, shaping much of the wine culture as we know it today. Nearby is California's newly established Pinnacles National Park, an ancient volcano and California Condor habitat.

Love Saves is like eating a shower peach. What is a shower peach, you ask? Exactly as it sounds: the liberating, sensual, and feel-good experience of eating a peach in the shower and forgetting the mess. Without worrying if you’re going to get sticky, just let the juice flow, and the steam enhances the flavor. The wine itself is super soft, mellow, dry, and packs a fruit punch. Reminiscent of biting into a fruit gusher, you’re in for a tropical fruit explosion of pineapples and mangos intermingled with floral notes of white grapefruit blossoms and chrysanthemum tea.

The retro artwork is once again provided by the infinitely talented Poppy Faun, one of our favorite collagists and collaborators.

We paired Love Saves with our new favorite restaurant in Downtown Napa, Osha Thai. This is the fourth restaurant by chef Lalita Souksamlane, who started with a noodle shop in San Francisco in 1996.

Welcome everybody, to another funky red and white blend presented by the beloved Tank Garage Winery. 2022 marks a brand new season of eclectic wines released from this small town gas station in Calistoga but the one to watch today is none other than Checkered Past! We're not wasting any time so let’s get this race started.

The checkered flag goes down... and it’s Go! Go! Go!

This 2021 fan favorite is 51% Barbera, 19% Nero D'Avola, 18% Bianchetta Trevigiana, and 12% Montepulciano signaling our deep passion for Italian grape varietals.

Up first is Barbera, one of the most acidic red grapes on the track, so we are definitely making a pit stop for food. Second, Nero D'Avola is a lesser-known full-bodied Sicilian grape variety comprised of bold fruit-driven flavors; in this race, we're getting tons of black cherry. Third, Montepulciano may be Italy’s second most planted grape, but many folks have never even heard of it. It remains a rarity in California despite the climate being perfect to grow the perfect grapes for this beautiful, big, fruity wine. Last, but certainly not least, Bianchetta Trevigiana is a light, crisp, and juicy white grape with delicate acidity to round it all out. Together, these grapes cross the finish line as a blend that is slick and easy drinkin’. We know you'll love it. All bets are on.

Your first lap around the nose pulls in a whiff of popcorn stands on race day. Fuel up your tongue with notes of black pepper, thyme, leather, and figs, all qualities imparted by the 8 months spent in French oak barrels. As it settles in the glass, your taste buds downshift to tart raspberries and plum from the unique acidity created by the Barbera and Bianchetta.

Checkered Past revs up with food. We went full throttle with an heirloom tomato and cucumber salad with arugula, quinoa, ricotta salata, radish, sunflower seeds, and a lemon-mint vinaigrette from our new favorite dining spot. The Spinster Sisters is a Cozy New American restaurant in Santa Rosa with an evolving menu of original farm-to-table dishes. This Italian blend will also pair well with hand-cut pasta, assorted cheese, and even, chicken wings.

Behold the most uniquely-crafted and precious wine in our history. Our soul stone, our positive energy source, our Crystal Visions.

I bet you thought that wine had taken Cabernet Sauvignon to its farthest reaches. So did we. That was until we discovered the Tres Pinos vineyard and learned about crystal fermentation. Throughout the following text, you will be taken on a ride filled with blind leaps of faith and unexpected turns. And in the end, we hope you keep an open mind.

As you may know, experimenting is in our DNA. Doing what others haven't...or won't...is what drives us in winemaking. And for many years, we have brought in outside voices to speak with our winemaking team before each harvest, to educate us on new techniques, and to inspire us to push beyond our comfort zone.

In 2021, we invited our friend Jason Ruppert, the visionary behind crystal fermentation, to come to enlighten our crew. Jason is a natural winemaker and owner of Ardure Wines. With a rich history in Biodynamic and Organic farming, and stints alongside winemakers like Ted Lemon, Steve Matthiasson, Pax Mahle, and Scott Schultz, Jason first unleashed his crystals during Ardure's inaugural vintage in 2018.

"As a kid, I always had a rock pile next to my bed," Jason told us. "So with my brand, I just wanted to do something different that nobody else is doing. I think we need more energetic value in life right now, and any added vibrancy when you're making natural wine is good."

The process of crystal fermentation, as we would learn, involves fermenting grapes and juice near charged quartz crystals. Quartz naturally vibrates at an exact frequency and, when pressurized, can produce small volts of electricity. Jason believes this process helps add energetic vibrancy to his wine. And while Jason acknowledges the "woo-woo" perception of crystals, he also trusts in the scientific and historical literature as well. "The Egyptians put amethyst, rubies, and lapis in their goblets of wine. There's something there. Even way back then."

Inspired, our team felt this would be an interesting, if not wildly fun, experiment to try, but in a more Tank way. First, we sourced natural amethyst with white and rose quartz for our trial. Next, per Jason's instructions, we rinsed our crystals in the cool waters of Schoolhouse Beach in Bodega Bay. And lastly, during an overnight trip to Murphys, California, we charged our crystals under a waxing moon.

Crystals in hand, we next decided to do something completely bonkers: make a natural Cabernet Sauvignon. The idea of a whole cluster foot-stomped Cabernet Sauvignon with no additions seemed sacrilegious for our Napa Valley roots. But then bringing in the crystals really sent this project to another realm. So for something this crazy, we knew just where to turn for fruit.

Situated between the Calaveras fault and San Benito River lies the Tres Pinos Vineyard. Grown within its gravely loam soil are 13 acres of clone 8 Cabernet Sauvignon vines that produce fruit with more elegant, herbal characteristics than its Napa Valley counterpart. But nevertheless, delicious. Thanks to farming from the Siletto family, these grapes are organically grown without the use of herbicides and pesticides.

Harvested on October 7, 2021, and hauled up to our production garage in Napa Valley, we foot stomped the fruit whole cluster...RECORD SCRATCH...wait, y'all foot-stomped Cab? Yes. We realize it is unconventional, but we wanted to try a more atypical approach with stem inclusion. After that, we tossed our grapes into some macro bins and set near a fully charged quartz crystal. After four weeks of cosmic fermentation (and some very careful punch-downs), we distanced our quartz farther, pressed the grapes, and laid our juice to rest inside of neutral French Oak.

After tasting the wine for the first time, we experienced a vision board of emotions. While this certainly ain't your classic Napa Valley Cab, it is still packed full of dark fruit flavors and charged with the vibrant energy Jason had touted. A dark ruby color shimmers, inviting you in to smell the aromas of black cherries and violets. On the palate, a rush of bright and tart red fruit flavors pull you into a dark, decadent core of fresh blackberries and savory, herbal notes of thyme and sage. Elegantly lean tannins resonate around a joyful acidity and a vibrant finish. My god, we have unleashed something transcendental, a wine with flavors and textures we had never before tasted.

We chose to bottle the wine with no additions or thetans, unfined and unfiltered, to preserve the natural flavors of Tres Pinos and all the good vibrations. Hand-waxed and emblazoned with an image of our new crystal dreamer, this wine will surely open your third eye when it comes to the possibilities of Cabernet Sauvignon.

As for the impact of our crystal fermentation? We are believers.

The story

Tank exists because we believe in good wine, good food, and good music. We ride on fresh and funky vibes so we created a wine that will make you get your groove on. A remix of 49% Grenache, 49% Syrah, 1% Mourvedre, and 1% Cinsault, Hey DJ is the wine you will have on repeat.

This California red blend ain’t no sucka MC. 51% of our grapes were harvested from the beloved Sierra Foothills. The remaining 49% Syrah was plucked from Napa and whole-cluster fermented. The entire lot cozied up in neutral oak barrels, allowing those stellar cherry, stewed plum, and white pepper notes to shine. The result is a ruby red wine with crimson edges, lush tannins, and a finish as smooth as jazz. Hey DJ has bright acidity so do us a solid by pairing it with a winter soup, like minestrone. You jivin' yet?

The word “DJ” may mean different strokes for different folks but at its very core, a “disc jockey” is anyone who plays pre-recorded music to an audience. Whiskey á Go-Go in Paris, France opened in 1947 and is considered the first discothèque. Because “evil” jazz music was banned and most of the dance clubs were shut down, the earliest discos were basically the American concept of a speakeasy. We kid you not… the first underground raves were French DJs spinning jazz records to young dancers, requiring passwords, secret memberships, and changing locations. Hey DJ is a wine created for celebration so boogie down with a glass, string up that disco ball, and get on the dance floor.

Let’s rock this shit with Space Cowboy

A Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon blend that is truly out of this world. Let’s start with some Bordeaux math. This 83% Cab, 11% Merlot, 4% Cab Franc and 2% Malbec blend of dark matter bounds out of the glass with black currant, vanilla and pencil shaving aromas. This wine orbits around the palate with solid texture, soft entry and flavors of espresso, bitter chocolate, blackberries and licorice.

Paying tribute to the viticultural pioneers of Napa Valley and those of the cosmos, our Space Cowboy harkens back to the Space Race era. This post-war time in the late 1950s and early 1960s represented a time of American hope, wonder, exploration and freedom. We continue to be inspired by those brave men and women who continue to face the unknown and voyage into the darkness.

This is a true collector’s wine. Showing incredibly now, don’t be shy to age this wine for continued depth and nuance.
